Suggestions on how to re-do our porch. ?

by admin — Categories: Decks — Tags: , , 2 Comments

The previous owners painted the bottom of our porch (part u walk on) white. I absolutely positively undeniably unquestionably hate it. Any cost-efficient suggestions on how to fix this problem. I’ve tried using a pressure washer, but it took too much time and water. Our porch is a wrap-around and they painted every bit of it.

Strip paint off external brick wall or paint?

The outside of my house is currently painted an ugly yellow. I want it back to brick but now im wondering whether its better, cheaper and easier to paint the brick to a brick and mortar effect/pattern.

I tested some Removall 220 on a couple of bricks which stripped off the old paint pretty well with the use of a pressure washer, but the exposed brick itself feels a little chalky and quite easily chipped/flaky.

I also noticed that the mortar around these particular bricks is black…? (around the side of the house it is your normal mortar, but Ive never seen this black stuff before?)

So the question, am I going to cause myself trouble in stripping this wall to expose pretty bad brick faces or will it be ok? Or is there something I can do about this? Or, should I consider painting the brick to look like brick and mortar (painting the wall brick red and going over the mortar with a suitable colour)

Thanks

Pressure washing wood, problem!?

by admin — Categories: Decks — Tags: , , , , , 2 Comments

We have a wooden fence. It is really green in some areas, especially on the one end of the fence. A few sections actually. I’ve been pressure washing it and it’s coming very clean. Problem is, when it dries, it gets this white fluffy stuff on it and I have to do it again to get it off. It comes off easily, but it when it dries it’s back. Is this green stuff that I’m washing off algae? Is that what this white stuff is too when it’s dry? These few sections are REALLY green so there is a lot of this stuff. When it’s wet it looks almost new but once it dries is when the white stuff shows up. It does come off easy but it seems endless! I was wondering what exactly it is because I’m getting tired of constantly re-rinsing it to get this white stuff off, and what can I do about it? Would a more powerful pressure washer take it off better, maybe? We have a better one but it needs parts so I cannot use it right now. If that would make it easier maybe I should wait till it’s fixed to finish the fence. But this smaller one is cleaning it amazingly otherwise.

How do you remove chipping paint?

ok, I’m painting my boss’s house. But first i need to remove all the old chipping paint. he has really old redwood siding.

First I tried a paint scraper, that took too long. Then I tried using a pressure washer which damaged the wood and it didn’t even remove very much paint.

Then i tried using a liquid paint stripper, and it would only take off 1 layer at a time. So i had to reapply it 3 times, which ended up taking just as long as scraping it. Besides that, it was expensive and had very strong fumes.

Now I’m back to scraping it, then using a sander to even out the rough edges where it wouldn’t scrape off. That’s just taking forever.

Does anybody know of any faster way? Please help!

And after i’m all done scraping and sanding, is there anything else i can do to make sure the new paint doesn’t start chipping again in a few years?

The paint on my porch is peeling. I want to make it look good because we are getting ready to sell.?

by admin — Categories: Siding, Walls and Fences — Tags: , , , 3 Comments

What is the best way for me to do this job step by step. I have been told to either rent a sander, or use a pressure washer. Some of the wood has some deep grooves in them so should I use some kind of filler or replace the wood. Also, if I do manage to get all the paint off, is it better to paint again, or to use some type of natural stain. I want to do it the least expensive way, but I still want it to look good.
Thanks.

Is it necessary to wash cedar shingles before painting?

Our house was built in 1980 and has cedar shingles. We want to paint them. We already went out and bought the paint and primer at Lowes. What I am wondering is if it is necessary to pressure wash the shingles before priming and painting them. We don’t have a pressure washer and we really don’t want to have to buy one. If the shingles do need to be washed before painting, is there any other way to do it, other than using a pressure washer?
No, the shingles have definitely never been stained before. We purchased Valspar exterior paint.

Mold on the side of my house. How do I clean it?

by admin — Categories: Siding, Walls and Fences — Tags: , , , 8 Comments

My house has vinyl siding. The mold is only on the north side.of the house. I do have a pressure washer. It is a Husky and gives a decent amount of pressure. It only comes with one nozzle that is adjustable. I used it to remove some mold a few years ago,but that was just a small amount. Now there is quit a bit more and I am not sure what to do. Also can the mold be under the siding?
Thank you everyone in advance.

How long should I wait to pressure wash and clean mortar off of new brick construction?

I just made an outdoor bbq grill out of block and red sand surface clay bricks. I used type S cement and just finished it up. It’s decently clean but I want to get a uniform smooth mortar joint and clean up the extra mortar on the bricks. I have a pressure washer and was told it was the best way to go. How long should I wait for to spray the new mortar to clean? Will I have problems since I used type S or since the red clay bricks have a sand speckle outside?

How to clean our wooden fence?

by admin — Categories: Siding, Walls and Fences — Tags: , , , 4 Comments

Hello,
We recently purchased our home and are about to move in. One of our main concerns in our gray and shabby fence. How do we clean and seal it?

Can we rent a pressure washer from home depot or something? or should we let a professional do the job? Also how much would it cost?

Thanks!

How do you remove a paint spot from concrete?

by admin — Categories: Patios — Tags: , , , 4 Comments

Earlier today I dropped some modeling paint on my back patio, it is Testors brand if that makes any difference, and I’m not sure how to remove it. I have seen many people suggesting a power washer or sand blaster, but renting one for such a small area would be a waste of money. Are there any products that would remove it from concrete?

I have to clean some exterior brick that has green stains and it worn looking.?

I don’t want to use a pressure washer because the grout is thinning as it is. I want to use the Muriatic acid method. What is the best way to use this stuff. How many parts acid to water. Do I spray it on then rinse? How long to I leave it on before I rinse. Is there a better method than Muriatic acid? I don’t want to damage the mortar. Thanks.

How do I clean my wood railing outside before I water seal it again?

by admin — Categories: Siding, Walls and Fences — Tags: , 3 Comments

Do I have to use a pressure washer? I don’t have one and my railing isn’t very big either. What can I do? I’m late in sealing it. I sealed it almost 4 years ago when I got the railing.
