How to clean flagstone and slate?

by admin — Categories: Patios — Tags: , , , 2 Comments

Does anyone have any tips for cleaning years of dirt from outdoor flagstone and/or slate ? I’ve seen it suggested that a pressure washer is a good idea, however, I’m not sure if that alone would be effective.

Please ans, do you have to remove old stain before restaining a deck?

by admin — Categories: Decks — Tags: , , , 7 Comments

Hi,
I’ve seen some ans but no one really comes out and gives a complete ans on this one.

We have a deck that we used deck wash and a pressure washer on. The railings and part of the floor still have some old stain on it, however. I’m wondering, since stain will repel itself anyway, can we go ahead and use a similar color and just restain the deck at this point? Or, do we have to use a stripper first, then restain? Seems to me that if we match the color closely, we only have to restain.

THanks!
For those who say you can restain over old stain, will it be darker where the old stain was? (Really blotchy, in effect?)
THanks

How to clean dried night crawlers/worms off concrete?

I live in florida and just moved to a new house with a big porch. When it rained hard the other day a million nightcrawler worms crawled up on my porch in a mass suicide. The next morning they dried up and it’s hard to get them off of my textured concrete patio…they are stuck. I don’t want to have to be on my hands and knees or use a pressure washer everyday! Any suggestions for how to prevent/clean them off…they are like baked on. I know they are good for the garden but not my porch.

How do I safely remove unwanted mildew and other green mess from my front and back porch?

It has rained here for the entire summer and my porches, walkways and back of my house now have this green layer all over them that I suspect may be the cause of me getting and staying sick. I have a pressure washer but do not want to use bleach as it will kill off all of my plants that surround the concrete and want an environmentally friendly solution. I want to get rid of the green menace using the power washer and want to know what natural ingredients I should try with good ole hot water in the washer..the concrete can tolerate the pressure washing but the back of my house is hardiplank… is there any way to use the pressure washer without peeling up all the paint? thanks in advance for the advice.

What is the best way to clean paint spots and green spots from plants/shrubs on patio cement?

My front porch cement has paint spots from the previous owner

I have tried using a pressure washer without any luck. The other idea I had is to cover the cement with landscaping thin bricks or I have seen 12 x 12 tiles that have little tiny stones built in them which would be very nice looking however I have no clue on how to install these correctly.

Is this a good idea for resurfacing a cedar deck?

by admin — Categories: Decks — Tags: , , , , , 3 Comments

I have a fairly large cedar deck with 5/4” boards that were ruined by a putz I hired to stain it. He used a high-power pressure washer on it & tore up the wood. Of course I fired the guy and stained it myself. (Olympic Maximum semi-transparent “waterproof” stain). The stain has come up, leaving bare wood, from where all the gouges, etc. are.

I am considering turning the boards over and planing the new surface down by about 1/16 – 1/8 inch to clean them up. Does this sound like a reasonable solution? Would it make the boards too thin, or is there another reason I shouldn’t do this? The only other alternative I see is to buy all new wood, and that is just too expensive right now.

Thanks for your advice!

Cleaning remaining mildew off a pressure-washed deck?

by admin — Categories: Decks — Tags: , , 2 Comments

This weekend I used a pressure washer to clean mildew, etc. off two decks (a front and a back) that hadn’t been painted or even cleaned since they were first installed some years ago. On the back I just used water; on the front I used a spray-on cleaner (the kind you spray on and then let sit.) Both had the same result – I got 99% of the mildew off, but there are still some spots. I’m thinking of using some cleaner you use in the washer to get as much of the mildew off before scrubbing it off by hand. Will this help, or should I just go straight to hand cleaning?

All you pressure washing experts… How do I get old mildew/mold stains from brick house.?

I bought industrial strength Concrete and driveway cleaner that says is useful for brick as well and this did not help. I pretreated the house with my pressure washer at a low pressure and then used high pressure to wash it. The dirt and even some of the grout/morter came out but the black mold stains still are there. I even tried it full strength and this still did not help. Does anyone know of an acid or something a little safer than acid to use to remove this from my brick. I am sure it has not been cleaned in a longtime. I have all the dirt removed I just need the stains removed.
Again, I used a contractor strength cleaner, at a LOW PRESSURE setting, just to pre-treat it, I let it stand for 10 mins and NONE of it came off. I am using full pressure at 2700PSI, I believe that would be plenty of pressure. I pressure wash houses and roofs, it is jus this one house, that has not been cleaned forever, will not come clean. Thnaks for any answers.

Do I need to strip off all the old paint when repainting my deck?

by admin — Categories: Decks — Tags: , , , 2 Comments

I’m using a pressure washer to get the paint off my deck and it’s taking a long time. The medium setting takes forever, but the high setting rips the wood apart. I am wondering if I need to take all this time to get the paint off the wood, or can I just put two really good coats over the existing paint.
